Sample Exam Question 1
This is my sample essay for exam question 1.
In this extract, film elements contribute to the meaning of the protagonist and their struggles with inequality and being a woman. Agent Carter, the protagonist, wants to go on an assignment but is shot down and undermined by her male coworkers. Film elements such as costumes, locations, camera shots, and editing give context to audiences and allow them to understand the overall theme of inequality and struggles of being a woman.
To begin, the protagonist is highlighted as the main character through being the only woman in a room full of men. Mise en Scene elements are displayed throughout the clip that allow audiences to get a sense of the era. The costumes characters wear and the props such as phones, buzzers, and lights let us know that this is set in the past around the 1950s-1960s. Camera shots like the establishing shot show the setting, New York City. In these times, women were often undermined and pushed out of roles that they had before. This happens to Agent Carter as she is limited to easy tasks.
Secondly, sound elements contribute to meaning and how women were disrespected and mistreated. The extract uses dialogue which covey this meaning. Audiences are shown the protagonist and a man having a conversation. In this conversation, the protagonist requested to go on assignment. He quickly brushes this off telling her to relax and to let them handle it. He essentially tells the protagonist to sit back and do nothing leaving all the work for the more "capable" men. The dialogue and use of sound elements add to the overall theme of the excerpt. Music is also used throughout the clip which add a sense of mystery.
Thirdly, the use of editing let audiences know that Agent Carter is more than capable of handling herself. The protagonist answers a call that suggests more than one person go, and dispatches to the location. She quickly makes work of the three men and demonstrates her ability that she previously mentions. In the scene, action match is used which emphasizes her skill and ability. Sound editing and synchronous sounds bring the scene together to form the action sequence. Despite everyone telling her to relax and do nothing, she deals with it alone. These help reinforce the theme of how she is mistreated and struggles with inequality despite being capable.
To conclude, the excerpt uses editing, sounds, camera shots, and mise en scene elements that contribute to the meaning of inequality and the struggles of being a woman. The protagonist, despite being more than capable, is undermined and stuck doing menial work. Film elements help emphasize the theme through displaying her skill in fight scenes and using dialogue to let audiences know about her mistreatment.
