Mise En Scene

Cantina from star wars

This clip comes from the famous sci-fi franchise Star Wars. It was created and directed by George Lucas. Many costumes, sets, effects, and backgrounds were used to create world building and immerse viewers. These techniques come into play with Mise en Scene as a lot of it was physical due to the age and time the movie was created.

In this scene, the main character and his mentor are looking for information along with a pilot and his partner. This scene provides narrative information through highlighting the main character in white. White is highlighted the most and light focuses mainly on the main character. His costume choice shows his innocence and how he stands out the most in the dimly lit cantina. The cantina is dark, crowded, and suggests that it might be a violent, dangerous area.

The mood and atmosphere is dangerous and possibly violent. White which is mostly only seen on the main character represents a contrast to the surrounding dark environment. Showing a scene like this really helps with immersion and brings the audience in. Displaying the world and what type of characters they can expect to see.

Showing a cantina from another planet helps emphasize the scifi genre. Aliens, unknown drinks and food, and music would allow audience members to realize that this isn’t earth. The costumes created a sense of a unique world with a mix of different cultures and blends. These costumes also contribute to a shock factor since aliens and non-human characters weren’t common during the time it was filmed.

Finally, this scene was one of my favorites and made the movie a favorite because it really showcases the scifi genre. Usually in sci-fi films many unique sets and costumes are present. In this specific scene and throughout the movie, the costumes help contribute to world building which is why this is one of my favorites. This scene is also very immerse and allows me to really feel like I am there.

To conclude,  this scene from Star Wars has many Mise en Scene properties. The set, lighting, music, and costumes are all unique and add to the scene. The use of lighting and colors to highlight who the main character is amidst the crowded cantina is a part of the Mise En Scene. Star Wars is a classic and the cantina scene is iconic throughout the film world.
